Election Security You Can Verify.
An election is only as strong as the trust in its result. WEVS protects every ballot from the moment a voter signs in to the moment the result is declared — and makes that protection visible to the people who need to trust it: the electoral office, the candidates, their agents and the independent auditor. More than 200 000 ballots, seven years of consecutive institutional elections, and zero contested outcomes.
Zero contested outcomes. Every election completed and declared.
Eight Protections, One System
Each protection answers a question someone will ask on voting day. Together they are why our elections end in a declared result, not a dispute.
A Secret Ballot by Design
No record links a ballot to a voter, and an independent auditor can verify it. Nobody at Wolfatek, the institution or a candidate can see how anyone voted.
One Voter, One Ballot
Each voter can cast exactly one ballot, saved in a single, complete step. A second attempt is refused and recorded.
Codes That Work Once, Only When Polls Are Open
Every voter receives their own single-use code by SMS and email. Codes are useless before voting opens and worthless once their voter has voted.
Every Sign-In Accounted For
Each sign-in is recorded against the voter, and attempts after a voter has already voted are flagged to the election office as they happen.
An Audit Trail Written as It Happens
An append-only record of the election, with regular exports to the independent audit firm while polls are open — evidence gathered live, not reconstructed afterwards.
Everyone Watches the Same Count
On request, registered candidate agents and observers receive automated live candidate results on WhatsApp throughout polling. Suspicion has nowhere to grow.
No Errors Under Pressure
When thousands of voters arrive at once, they are queued and brought through in turn instead of seeing an error. Load-tested at 5,000 voters completing a ten-portfolio ballot in 91 seconds.
South African Data, Destroyed on Time
Hosted in South Africa on infrastructure Wolfatek runs, built for POPIA, and destroyed with a certificate after the result.
Verifiable Where It Matters
Institutional elections are not disputed over cryptography. They are disputed over who was on the roll, whether anyone voted twice, whether the count was changed, and whether anyone could see it happening. WEVS answers every one of those with evidence that an independent auditor — and every candidate’s agent — can see for themselves.
Research-Grade Cryptography Is Built for a Different Problem
End-to-end cryptographic schemes ask every voter to check an encrypted receipt themselves. That suits national pilots with specialist observers; in a student or member election it adds steps that cost turnout and that few voters ever use.
WEVS Puts Verification Where People Look
Independent audit with evidence gathered while polls are open, live results to every registered agent and observer, and a secret ballot an auditor can confirm — verification that the people with a stake in the result actually use.
Access Built for Real Voters
Single-use codes by SMS and email, nothing to install, and less than 2.5 MB of data per voter on average. A secure election nobody can get into is not secure — it is empty.
A Threat Model Fit for the Job
WEVS is engineered for the threats institutional elections actually face: impersonation, double voting, roll disputes, surges, and accusations of tampering. Every one is answered by design.
Online Voting Security: Frequently Asked Questions
Is online voting secure?
A properly built online voting system can be more secure than paper. WEVS keeps the ballot secret, allows one ballot per voter, records an audit trail as the election happens and is independently audited, and it has delivered more than 200 000 ballots with zero contested outcomes.
Can anyone see how I voted?
No. WEVS is designed so that no record links a ballot to a voter, and an independent auditor can verify that separation.
What stops someone voting twice?
Each voter can cast exactly one ballot. A second attempt is refused and recorded, and the election office can see it.
What if someone steals my voting code?
Voting codes are single-use and only work while polls are open, and every sign-in is recorded against the voter. Once a voter has voted their code is worthless, and suspicious attempts are flagged to the election office.
Can the result be tampered with?
Every ballot is saved the moment it is cast, an append-only audit trail records the election as it happens, and on request candidate agents and observers receive live results on WhatsApp throughout polling, so the count is watched while it happens, not reconstructed afterwards.
Who checks the election?
An independent audit firm receives the evidence it needs while polls are open and after they close. Your electoral office or returning officer declares the result.
Where is the data kept, and for how long?
The election system and its database are hosted in South Africa on infrastructure Wolfatek runs. Election data is destroyed after the result and a Data Destruction Certificate is issued.
